Abstract

The astonishingly graceful and historic Waldo-Hancock Bridge located on Route 1 just south of Bucksport is one of just three suspension bridges in the state. It opened in 1931 as the "Most Beautiful Steel Bridge" in its class that year. The award, presented by the American Institute of Steel Construction in Chicago, is given biennially and recognizes a combination of aesthetics, innovation, economy and engineering solutions for the site. The Department of Transportation is embarking on a $20.8 million, five-year repair and restoration of the narrow span, which serves a year-round average of 8,000 vehicles a day.
