Abstract

Maine is 98 percent white, as compared to 77 percent for the nation as a whole, and some minority students at the state's three small liberal arts colleges feel the schools need to seek greater cultural diversity. The proportion of students of color at Bowdoin College is 13 percent, at Bates College it's 9 percent and at Colby it's 7 percent, below the 29 percent at a comparable institution such as Amherst. Minority groups at Bates, Bowdoin and Colby have been vocal recently, saying that ignorance and insensitivity are compromising their college experience. Details.
