Abstract

Solon Elementary School, which serves 149 students from K-8, has incorporated the Solon Multi-age Integrated Learning Experience (SMILE) into its curriculum, and is regarded by many in the education establishment as a progressive school in the forefront of the school restructuring movement in Maine. There is significant local opposition to the principles of values-based education as articulated in Maine's Common Core of Learning, and between 13 and 30 students have been withdrawn from Solon Elementary over the past three years by unhappy parents.
