Abstract

The state Department of Marine Resources is developing regulations that would allow relaying, the moving of shellfish from contaminated areas to open coastal areas where they can cleanse themselves naturally. Oysters and quahogs would be the best candidates for relaying, since they tend to transfer well, as opposed to clams or mussels. Relaying is already allowed by the interstate shellfish commission, and is extensively used in Connecticut, which has a $54 million oyster business.
