Abstract
Statistics compiled by the Maine Bureau of Parks and Recreation show that the number of visitor days in the North Woods has increased from 121,000 in 1974, when figures were first kept, to 202,000 in 1992. Data for the Allagash region show that visitor days have kept steady, while the actual number of people have increased, meaning that even though the number of visitors has grown people are not staying as long. Some observers believe that if the state isn't careful the North Woods will lose its wilderness appeal and a whole way of life. Details.
