Abstract
U.S. represenative Thomas H. Andrews was twice elected to Congress in Maine's 1st District with the help of a broad coalition of political progressives, but that coalition may not be enough to help him make inroads into the core of moderate Republicans and Democrats who in the past have voted for U.S. represenative Olympia J. Snowe, Andrews' opponent in the race for the U.S. Senate. Maine's progressives have not become as marginalized as their counterparts elsewhere in the nation, but many of Andrews' supporters are wondering how much he will have to mainstream his views to win his first statewide political contest.
