Abstract
The Maine Legislature passed the Forest Practices Act in 1989, and rules adopted the following year banned clearcuts of more than 250 acres and required buffer zones and mitigating practices for clearcuts between 35 and 250 acres. clear-cutting hasn't stopped in the state; it has just changed size, form and even its name. Approximately 450,000 acres will be harvested statewide during 1994. Plans filed just for cuts, of all types, of more than 500 acres total more than 1.5 million acres for the next two years. Details.
