Abstract

The closure of traditional fishing grounds on Georges Bank is affecting some 300 boat owners, fewer than 100 of them from Maine. A boat buyout, estimated at $100 million, is gaining support, and will prevent widespread bankruptcy in the industry and conserve the remaining fisheries. The buyout would remove around 200 offshore boats, and one observer thinks any federal money should go toward removing the Georges boats first.
