Abstract

Sappi Ltd., the South African company that in October purchased Scott Paper Co.'s S. D. Warren Division for $1.6 billion, reportedly has a record of air and water pollution problems at its mills. The company has been criticized for diminishing forest bioiversity with its tree plantations, and uses chlorine dioxide at three of its plants. Some observers feel the debt that Sappi assumed in its purchase of S. D. Warren is a greater threat to the Maine woods than the company's environmental record.
