Abstract

Increased demand for post-consumer paper has resulted in prices to increase from $90 per ton to $200 per ton over the last year. Statler Tissue Co. of Massachusetts, which has a mill in Augusta, last week ran out of money to buy recycled fibers, leaving 50 to 100 people out of work. Officials from Statler met last week with the Finance Authority of Maine to ask for guarantees on a short-term capital infusion of up to $2 million.
