Abstract

"West End People" piece with a profile of Abraham A. Schechter, a West End resident since 1985, Archivist & Special Collections Librarian at Portland Public Library. A native of New York City, Schechter worked as a photographer for 14 years before studying library science and archives administration in Boston. He has taught at the Maine College of Art and at Saint Joseph's College. Schechter created the Library's Archives, and is spearheading a Portland Neighborhoods archival initiative, aimed at preserving the unique history of Portland. The project is still in the conceptual stage, though the library is soliciting donations of photographs and documents that tell the neighborhood stories- along with the "documentary story of Portland."
