Aerial view of Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute (SMVTI) from southeast.
Construction site for the Hildreth Science Center, in foreground center. Portion of Fort Preble, at right.
The Maine Vocational Technical Institute first opened in Augusta, in 1946, and moved to the site in South Portland in 1952. The name of the school was changed to Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute in 1964, and later to Southern Maine Technical College in 1989. In 2003, the college was renamed Southern Maine Community College.
