    Bowdoin College was founded in 1794, and named after Massachusetts Governor James Bowdoin. At the time, Maine was a district of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Early graduates include Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Joshua L. Chamberlain, and President Franklin Pierce.
