Mr. Ahrens bought the business from Eustace Lekousi, in 1977, and proceeded to grow the business threefold, using 1200 lbs of sugar per week, and beginning his work day at 2am. He told the Evening Express that he and his helpers baked 100 cakes, 60 pies, and 25 dozen doughnuts daily. Guenter's wife, Gerta Ahrens, managed the retail section of the bakery. Ahrens later moved the bakery to 559 Brighton Avenue, renaming the business Guenter's Bakery.
