    Description

Exterior view of the Deering Oaks "Castle," from west. At the time, the Castle hosted the Deering Oaks park concession stand, "Mobey Dick Seafood Takeout." Price board at left. Forest Avenue at right.

The Deering Oaks Castle was designed by Portland architect Frederick Augustus Tompson, and built in 1894 as a warm shelter for pond ice skaters, complete with a fireplace. The "Castle" has since served as a city visitors' center, ice-skate rental venue, and various snack bars.
