Description
Views of Browne Trading Company, 260-262 Commercial Street.
The building, attached to Merrill's Wharf, had previously been the location of Armour and Company Wholesale Meats.
The Market opened in 1991 by Rod Browne Mitchell, specializing in caviar, fresh fish, smoked seafoods, and various gourmet grocery items. Browne Trading has been supplying elite restaurants nationally. According to the article in the Maine Sunday Telegram, on 31 January 1993:
"Most of the fish he buys is caught hook, not in nets. Nets make fish crash and squirm against each other. They can get stressed. A fish caught by hook or hand generally is firmer and has more luster."
