Description
Exterior view of the Mariners Church Building, 366-378 Fore Street (southwest corner of Fore Street and Market Street), from east. The building was constructed in 1828 by the "Trustees of the Mariners' Church." The 3rd floor was devoted to the Portland Mariners' Society chapel. In 1849, the building was described as the largest in Portland.
The building was damaged in the Great Fire of 1866, but repaired shortly afterward. In 1969 the building was purchased by the C.H. Robinson paper company which saved it from demolition. After the Mariners Church was restored (1972), it was declared a historic landmark (1973).
