Description
Views of the Columbia Barber Shop, 609 Congress Street, with owner Danny Mardigian. He began was a barber in 1936, working in the Libby Building (Congress Square). From 1954 to 1961, the barber shop was in the Columbia Hotel at 645 Congress Street (the hotel later became The Portlander), and from 1961-1999 the shop was in the same building as the State Theatre.
Mardigian was an Armenian immigrant, arriving in Portland in 1922. He famously played the violin in the shop, and performed with the Portland Symphony Orchestra from 1929-1946. The business closed In 1999, after Mardigian passed away at age 93.
