Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on air pollution in Maine. According to Jim Brooks, director of the Bureau of Air Quality for the state Department of Environmental Protection, auto emissions play a major role and more than any one single-point source of pollution. Dr. Paul Liebow, a physician at hospitals in Bangor and Houlton, says air pollution in Maine causes between 150 to 200 early deaths and up to 2,000 extra visits to emergency rooms every year. With details about proposals intended to help reduce air pollution in Maine such as Rideshare, propane fuel, emissions testing, and the unfunded legislative voucher program intended to replace pre-1988 vehicles with newer models.
