Abstract
"Cover Story" piece on Maine's Green Independent Party, which has had only three electoral victories in the entire state since it's establishment in 1984. In 1999, Matt Tilley, 41, of Bangor, one of the party's founders, predicted the Greens would sign up 10,000 members and have 50 candidates for the Legislature before the 2000 election. But registrations totaled about 2,200, down from a high of 4,700 in 1996, and only four candidates. With a brief history of the Greens in Maine and information about some of the individuals who have kept it alive.
