Abstract

About 800 workers at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery left the yard for the final time yesterday. About 500 workers were laid off and the remaining 300 took early retirement as the yard tries to cope with post-Cold War cuts in defense spending. The yard's workforce now stands at about 4,100 workers, about half of what it was five years ago.
