Abstract

Maine's metal industry accounts for around 30 percent of the state's manufacturing jobs, and the average machinist makes $30,000 annually. One-third of the firms export outside of the nation, and major customers are in aerospace, machine tool, plastics and other industries. The strength of the state's metal industry resulted in it being chosen to be the first industrial sector included in the new Total Quality Maine program, a nearly $1 million state campaign to promote Maine's most promising industries in national publications.
