Abstract

Two leaky valves were responsible for the cloud of radioactive vapor that contaminated a group of University of Southern Maine students last week, but it remains unclear whether the problem is due to design flaws or procedures at the plant. The leaks occurred while a filtering tank was being flushed, and pressure differences caused water to leak from the reactor coolant system into the tank.
