Abstract

Malcolm Hunter Jr. and Bob Seymour, both professors at the University of Maine at Orono, have proposed a management plan for Maine's North Woods which includes protected ecological sanctuaries, high-yield softwood plantations and vast tracts managed for the benefit of all species. When the so-called Triad Concept was explained to landowners, many expressed concerns about taking land out of production for reserves and challenged the idea of tree plantations, which have never been popular in Maine.
