Abstract

Article discussing the large influx of African-born asylum seekers who arrived in Portland in June of 2019. Describes the arrival of nearly 300 people during one week, and the transformation of the Portland Exposition Building into an emergency shelter. Discusses efforts to help address the asylum seekers' immediate needs, as well as future needs for housing, work, and legal services. Relates the intentions of other Maine communities to integrate some of the newcomers. The hope that new Mainers will bolster the state's workforce and aging population is a recurrent theme.
