Abstract

A discussion of the Host Homes program launched to accommodate the large number of asylum seekers who arrived in Maine during the summer of 2019. Describes the affordable housing crisis in Greater Portland and the search for alternatives once the temporary shelter at the Portland Expo was closed. Describes the cultural training made available to host families. Explores the struggles facing the asylum seekers, including adjusting to a foreign culture, coping with their traumatic histories, and navigating the complicated legalities of applying for asylum.
