Abstract

A profile of Abdullahi Ali, founder of Gateway Community Services, an organization dedicated to counseling and other services tailored to the particular needs of the immigrant community. Discusses how Ali, a Somali who spent years in refugee camps, was motivated to help others who suffered from the traumas of torture and war. Describes the work of Gateway Community Services, where staff familiarity with the various languages and cultures of the people they serve - especially the stigmas attached to mental illness in different cultures - helps immigrants feel secure accessing the help they need.
