Abstract

Bakhita Saabino is the first woman to be elected the leader of the nonprofit South Sudanese Community of Maine, the oldest African community association in Maine, founded in 1994. Saabino, a teacher in the Portland Public Schools, has plans to address housing needs and hopes to collaborate with officials at the school, city, and state levels.
