Abstract

An overview of the status of the large influx of asylum seekers who entered Maine during the summer of 2019, weeks after the closure of the temporary shelter at the Portland Expo. Discusses the continuing challenges of meeting the basic needs of immigrant families, and the overwhelming response of volunteers willing to help. Discusses frustration that $900,000 in private donations given to the city of Portland to help the asylum seekers has yet to be released, hindering assistance efforts. Describes efforts to assemble support networks and hire professional social workers who can assist the newcomers in establishing themselves in Maine.
