Abstract

At a January 19 press conference, Maine Governor Janet Mills unveiled a plan to create an Office of New Americans (ONA). The ONA will address the state's worker shortage by creating workforce training opportunities, language acquisition assistance and legal support for immigrants. Supporters say the plan will allow immigrants to become more self-sufficient members of the community. Eighteen other states have already established similar offices. Includes a sidebar with comments about the importance of the new office from Rep. Deqa Dhalac and Apphia Kamanda Mpay, Co-Executive Director of Common Threads of Maine.
