Abstract

Brief overview of a bill under consideration in the Maine Legislature (LD 1955) that would make low-cost healthcare available to more people and would protect patients from unfair debt collection procedures. New Mainers are often adversely affected by medical debt because of difficulties understanding what financial assistance is available to them. A representative of the Maine Hospital Association expressed frustration with the bill, saying that there had been no prior outreach to hospitals about the proposed law.
