Abstract

An exploration of Juneteenth and what it means to the Black community in Maine. Black leaders such as Joseph Jackson of Maine Inside Out and Angela Okafor of the Permanent Commission on the Status of Racial, Indigenous and Tribal Populations discuss the history of Juneteenth and what it symbolizes to them today. They discuss the multifaceted nature of Maine's Black community, which includes a range of individuals, from African Americans with long histories in the state to new immigrants. The leaders discuss racial justice progress made in Maine and across the nation and the work which remains to be done.
