Abstract

An overview of the fire and other safety risks New Mainers can face in houses filled with construction materials and equipment unknown to them in their home countries. Discusses the importance of education by landlords and advocates to help new arrivals learn how to live in their new homes safely. Notes barriers, such as language and fear of police and emergency personnel which may prevent immigrants from communicating their needs and asking for help. Mentions common dangers which New Mainers are often vulnerable to, such as improper use of space heaters, risky cooking techniques, and the lack or misuse of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
