Abstract

A look at how lead poisoning is especially a problem for those living in poverty, and in Maine, is especially prevalent in Portland and Westbrook. Older houses, especially ones that are poorly maintained, are linked to lead poisoning because they were usually painted with lead paint. Measures that are being taken to address the problem are to step up blood screenings of children and to test pre-1950 rental properties, but with the severe housing shortage, some residents may have no choice about where to live. Community health workers and immigrant-led organizations are key to educating newly arrived families. Includes sidebar where Hibo Omer, Executive Director of the New Mainers Public Health Initiative, talks about her own experience with lead poisoning.
