Abstract

A description of a day of professional training that was held at University of Southern Maine on December 12 to highlight the importance of understanding the culture of immigrant and refugee communities when providing care for mental health issues. The session was presented by Ahmed Hassan, licensed therapist and program director of Summit Guidance, a mental health agency based in Minnesota. Hassan discussed the role that proverbs and metaphors play in Somali culture and how they can be used to help destigmatize mental illness and to make concepts accessible.
