Abstract
The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church replaced the Abyssinian Church as the primary place of worship for Portland's African American community in the late 1800s. Renamed Green Memorial AME Zion Church in honor of Moses Green, the church was in decline when the Rev. Margaret Lawson joined as pastor in May 1993. Green Memorial today is regaining its vitality and centrality for the city's African American community, and Lawson is mostly responsible. Details.
