Abstract
The bars in Portland are packed on a nightly basis with big hair listening to bands playing other people's music, while musicians doing original material find it hard to get paying gigs. Neal Grover, who books cover bands for area bars, says people don't want to pay money if they don't know the music. Bill Beasley of Granny Killam's, an Old Port bar that has supported and promoted original music for three years, likens cover bands to the people who sell black velvet paintings on the side of the road.
