Abstract
The new Portland-South Portland Bridge will require 8,000 tons of steel, 75,000 cubic yards of concrete and $165 million, and 160 people will be working on the project every day at the peak of construction next summer. The massive bridge, 82 feet tall, will open 40 percent less for marine traffic, but poses some problems for bicyclists and pedestrians. The concerns of the people who live closest to the bridge have influenced its design, and have helped tame it somewhat. Details.
