Abstract
The proposed magnet school for the arts appeared headed for passage when a bill authorizing $285,000 in start-up funding received initial approval in both houses of the Maine Legislature. House Democrats decided to link the school to a health insurance program for children of the working poor, but Republican senators decided to let the two programs and a third die rather than give in to Democratic demands. Five Portland representatives initially supported the magnet school, but the four Democrats who supported the proposal ended up voting it down. Details.
