Abstract
Unum Corp. last year considered establishing its Enterprise Processing Information Center in Portland, but turned down an economic incentive package worth in excess of $12 million and chose a site in Columbia, South Carolina. The decision means a net loss of 135 jobs for Greater Portland's Unum employees in 1995 and the possibility of more losses by the end of 1996. Maine Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Thomas McBrierty is concerned that Unum's decision could mean the company could eventually move more of its operations out of Maine. Robert Malik, chief information officer for Unum, said the decision to locate the center in South Carolina was business as usual. Details.
