Abstract
A 1995 University of Maine at Orono study said that a woman with a two-year degree can expect to earn $4,365 less than a man with a tenth-grade education. Many women learn refined, specific skills through vocational education, sometimes at low-cost community colleges. Maine has only a limited community college system, but it does have schools like Andover College, the Headhunter School of Hair Design and the Westbrook College dental hygiene school. Details, profiles of Wanda Walker, who is studying office management at Andover College; Krissy Hawkins, 29, studying hairdressing at Headhunter; and Nikki Favro, 27, a dental hygiene student at Westbrook College.
