Abstract
Raphael Ekra, a native of the Ivory Coast studying electrical engineering at Southern Maine Technical College, was arrested by Portland police after a May 5 incident outside the Chestnut Street Church. The incident was videotaped, and Ekra has been charged with two counts of assault and one count of disorderly conduct. Ekra was attending a service of the African Fellowship Congregation just prior to his arrest, and AFC Pastor Mutima Peter said the arrest was particularly traumatic for some congregation members because they have been victims or witnesses of political violence. Leaders of the refugee community have demanded a meeting with Portland city manager Robert Ganley. Details.
