Abstract
Profile of Robin Thayer, 31, of Portland, who overcame multiple birth defects, profound deafness, a classification of mild mental retardation, and numerous psychiatric labels. Thayer was an involuntary patient at the Augusta Mental Health Institute six years ago, but now lives in her own apartment in Franklin Towers on Cumberland Avenue. Some of Thayer's successes are due in part to her being alive at a time when sevices for deaf people with disabilities are on the increase in Maine. Meryl Troop, director of deaf services for the Maine Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse, has helped institute changes that have affected some in Maine's deaf community.
