Abstract

"Edge" piece on "The Last Closet: The Real Lives of Lesbian and Gay Teachers," by Rita Kissen. Kissen, associate professor of education and human development at the University of Southern Maine, documents the effects of homophobia on schools and communities through interviews with teachers, including a dozen from Maine. Kissen, the mother of a lesbian teacher, is a co-founder of a Maine chapter of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Teachers Network.
