Abstract
The federal Health Care Financing Administration has initiated a review of the Augusta Mental Health Institute following the murder of Wrendy Hayne, 33, a patient. Hayne was stabbed to death in April by Harold Pulsifer, 39, a fellow patient. The Maine Department of Human Service's Division of Licensing and Certification, acting under federal jurisdiction, last week conducted its second review of AMHI. AMHI receives $18 million of its $27 million annual budget from federal funds, and if the facility is deemed unsafe it could lose millions in Medicare funding.
