Abstract

"City" piece on The Community, an international messianic sect that established a 20-member commune in Gorham two years ago. The Community, whose believers homeschool their children and punish kids by hitting them on the palm with a thin wooden rod, were at the center of a 1984 police raid on a settlement in Island Pond, Vermont. John Brown of Portland is trying to get his grandaughter away from his son's ex-wife, who resides with The Community in Massachusetts. The Community is opening the Common Ground Restaurant, a cafe in Gorham.
