Abstract
Maine Medical Center is seeking state approval for the Maine Partners Health Plan, a for-profit insurance program MMC created with its own doctors and Blue Cross and Blue Shield. The plan mandates the use of MMC and its physicians, and plan administrators say they want to have 33,400 customers in three years. Observers estimate the health maintenance organization could siphon off at least 16 percent of Mercy Hospital's business. Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston has applied to market a similar program that cuts out its rival, St. Mary's Hospital. Mercy, St. Mary's and a number of other hospitals have filed official objections to MMC's new program. Details.
