Abstract
"City" piece on the proposed joint venture between Maine Medical Center and Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Maine. MMC and BCBS are asking the state for permission to create the Maine Partners Health Plan, a for-profit insurance company that would restrict Portland members to using MMC and its doctors. Mercy Hospital in Portland and St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston are intervenors in the matter, and the Maine Bureau of Insurance will hold a public hearing on the proposal January 14. Some observers believe BCBS is trying to create a monopoly. Details.
