Abstract
Michael Tayman, a senior at Portland High School, is deaf, and is able to compete on the school's wrestling team with the assistance of an interpreter. Tayman was wrestling in the Southern Maine Classic on January 18 when officials ordered Tayman's interpreter, Tracy Frederick, off the mat. PHS Athletic Director Ray Mailman said Tayman was the victim of discrimination. Richard Heikkinen, the official who ordered Frederick off the mat, suggested officials should look for alternatives to allowing the interpreter on the mat.
