Abstract

"City" piece on the charitable care given by Maine Medical Center and Mercy Hospital. A study by the Maine People's Alliance and Community Catalyst of Boston shows that MMC received $23.2 million in federal, state and local tax breaks from 1990-94, and gave $16.3 million in free services to the poor. Mercy received $16.5 million in tax breaks during the same period, and gave $3.5 million in charity care.
